Hand painted parking signs

I was resonantly contacted to replicate a sign painted by the late Dave Connery, RIP. I can't remember the last time I used my air brush and it was fun to use it again.
The majority of the sign is all hand painted the boarder, letters and old GMC are all hand painted and some custom mixed colors to match the original sign, with highlights done using an air brush. I painted the signs one color/element each night in assembly line fashion getting faster each night, the finish photo below is out in the garage as that's where I air brushed the highlights on the hand painted signs.

Reflecting on the project a lot of time was wasted setup and taring down each night as it was just to cold to paint in the garage and not having dedicated studio has me hunting around for things like an hour long search for the air brush...

Pinstriping a Cadillac

Hand painted Pin Striping is a love and a challenge especially on 15 foot plus lines, I start off this job with no tape down the side of this red Cadillac and just could not keep a consistent distance from the body line.

To fix my problem
I used some green 1/4" painters tape, the adhesive of this tape will not stay on the car after you remove the tape.
Placing the tape line 1/4" higher then were I wanted to stripe the Cadillac, on both sides of the car, note before adding this guide line I made a couple reference points on the front and rear quarter panels to keep both sides symmetrical.

Once the tape was down the hand painted Pinstriping began

Shooting Pinstriping

Photographing Pinstriping or Paintings in general can sometimes be a challenge, there are layers and reflection that can hide the detail of your painting.
I was lucky enough to have access to a camera with a polarized lens, the lens is adjustable and takes out the glare and making the colors pop.

Below is a Pinstriping panel I painted in 2010, I had never be able to get good picture until now.

When Science Fails

“Why is my red signs fading”  it’s true red does fade much faster than anything else no matter the material, but not to worry, there is a work around and it’s quite effective.

The science behind it is rather interesting but I will not bore you with the details, I’ll let an expert do that! "The red dyes are more susceptible to fading because they look red and thus absorb blue, and blue is the higher-energy light," notes David Erhardt of the Smithsonian Center for Materials Research and Education.

Well there you have it, all your burning questions have been answered;  I have seen a lot of faded red signs that are faded and I’m sure you have too.

The work around is an easy fix for your ‘sign guy’ should be able to help you when you’re the sign is built, the process can be different depending on the materials used and simply put it’s a UV coating to protect the colour pigment.

If you have a red sign please make sure you get it UV coated and remember ”A business with no sign is a sign of no business”

Health and Safety

This is not an Art post but one of importance.

Paint fumes are a very real danger and I do prefer not to wear a respirators and will always have a fan and door/window open when painting.

Respirators have advanced in the last 20 years sins I have been around the industry of painting there  are everything from half face respirators to full face with powered filters that are on a belt.

I personal us the 3M half face respirators but have a number of 3M GVP cartridges for sale on amazon as they do have a best before date and I will never use the all.

If you do not wear protective gear please do so, all the safety gear now fits great and why spend your weekends in the emergency when you can enjoy it at home!

Zebra Truck Paint Job

Super fun paint job over the last week, not totally Pinstriping, but Custom Paint just the same.

Paint a Zebra Car is now off my bucket list.

The design has function as well as great looks, there were a number of rust spots and rock chips hidden under the strips.

This was a very rejuvenating project and could not have been done without great customers!
